KAAMOS
Finnish for polar night

The polar night is the night lasting more than 24 hours, usually inside the polar circles. In regions inside the polar circles, the length of the time when the sun is below the horizon varies from 20 hours at the Arctic Circle and Antarctic Circle to 179 days at the Poles.

(Wikipedia)

Kaamos or Polar night happens annually around the Polar Regions. During the polar night the sun doesn’t rise above the horizon. This means that during the day the sunlight is present for a short period of time or not a at all. Where there is polar night, there is midnight sun. Polar night affects everyone in the northern part of the globe, although complete darkness exists only in the far north. Kaamos is a group of young designers formed by: Erik Bertell, Vesa Kattelus, Katriina Nuutinen, Anna Palomaa, and Matti Syrjälä. The name ‘Kaamos’ (Polar Night) originates from the concept of polarity: a way to look at things from opposite directions.

The darkness is concrete in snowless southern Finland. When contrasts disappear the surroundings are turned into grey mass. The importance of light becomes apparent. Artificial light becomes the requirement for all activity. Our aim is to create a meaningful environment with light to bring solace from the darkness.
